To support the many key workers as identified by the Government, the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk have introduced free parking in priority car parks in King's Lynn and Hunstanton.
From 2 April 2020, key workers will be able to park in the following car parks free of charge:
- Austin Fields East - near the sorting office, King's Lynn
- Vancouver Quarter car park - Sainsburys upper deck, King's Lynn
- Central Car Park, Hunstanton
Commenting on the news, James said:
"I welcome this step by the borough council which will help support those doing so much in this challenging time. Everyone else should follow government advice to stay home and stay local for exercise."
To be able to park for free, key workers will need to place a document/card from their employer on their dashboard.
This must show:
- your employer's logo
- confirmation that you are a key worker as set out in the Government's guidance
- an authorised signatory.
This parking provision will be in place for the duration of the current stay home arrangements announced by the government last week. If the initial three week period announced by the government is extended, then this parking arrangement will be extended for as long as necessary.
Parking permit holders
Key workers who currently have parking permits will also benefit from the key workers parking. If you have an existing virtual permit, we'll extend any subsequent permit you have, once the Covid-19 response is over, by however many days are left on your current permit.
Please email [email protected] to register your request. Please include your registration number and current permit number within the email. Once Covid-19 is over and you apply for a new permit, you'll need to email [email protected] again, this time include your new permit number along with your registration number. Then we'll extend your new permit by the amount of days left on your old one.

During the current COVID-19 outbreak, those considered a key worker include:
- NHS staff
- social care workers
- schools and nurseries
- police officers
- court staff
- religious staff
- journalists
- some government staff
- delivery workers
- supermarket staff
- Army and MoD
- firefighters
- prisons and probation
- transport workers
- 'infrastructure' including gas and electric
- some financial services
