Commenting on the proposed National Restrictions, James said:
"I supported the introduction of the Local Covid Alert Tiered system as the best alternative to a national lockdown. While it protected the NHS and saved lives, I know how painful and costly the first lockdown was for people’s wellbeing and our economy.
The Prime Minster and the Cabinet have now been advised that due to increasing transmission rates across the country there is a serious risk the NHS will be overwhelmed within weeks. That data showing worrying increases in the infection rate led to the announcement at the weekend of proposed new time-limited national restrictions which will be debated and voted on by MPs on Wednesday.
Before that vote, I will be reviewing the evidence and reflecting on constituents’ views on both sides of the debate. I spoke to the Health Secretary yesterday about the data for Norfolk and what the criteria and plans are for returning to a local Tier system. I will be having further briefings to review and interrogate the data and projections for Norfolk with No. 10 officials, Health Ministers, as well as the Norfolk and Waveney CCG.
I am very conscious of the incredible sacrifices people and businesses across North West Norfolk have made to try and control this virus. In these briefings, I will continue to represent my constituents at this very difficult time."
