Following government support for new legislation to make British Sign Language (BSL) an officially recognised language, James returned to West Norfolk Deaf Association and took part in an introductory lesson of BSL.
During James' lesson he learnt how to greet people, say his name, and to explain his role as a MP. James then met with the members attending a coffee morning where he demonstrated what he had learnt, by introducing himself and explaining his role as MP for North West Norfolk..
With help of a BSL interpreter, James the hosted a Q&A session with the deaf club where they discussed the importance of the British Sign Language Bill for the deaf community, as well as the lack of interpreters in Norfolk, and issues faced when attending medical appointments without them.
James assured the deaf club that he would follow up on the various issues that were raised and W that he was supporting the British Sign Language Bill. His will be an important step in helping to improve the lives of deaf people and encouraging organisations to take up the BSL mantle.
