James Wild MP talks about the gunpowder plot, British values, and soapboxes at Heacham Junior School
After Heacham Junior School’s recent visit to Parliament’s education centre, James Wild MP for North West Norfolk had a return fixture as he visited their school to meet teachers and pupils.
Leading the school tour were Head Boy and Head Girl, Blake and Jasmine, accompanied by Deputy Headteacher, Ms Hunt and Assistant Headteacher, Ms Enters. Whilst touring the school Blake and Jasmine showed James to the different year groups, stopping along the way to make reference to the range of display boards which included pupils work and art.
James joined Year 4’s history lesson as pupils learnt about the Gunpowder Plot. James told the pupils that before King Charles III comes for the State Opening of Parliament the Yeoman of the Guard - the Royal bodyguards - search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster for explosives which they then included in their storyboards.
Following the tour, the Junior Leadership Team joined James in the hall for a lively Q&A session. Pupils questioned James on his work in Parliament, what his greatest challenge has been and his biggest ideas, and if he was going to take part in the Hunstanton Soapbox race again this year. James was interested to learn about school life at Heacham Junior School and the focus on the British values they implement into school life and the importance of kindness.
Commenting on the visit, James said:
“I was impressed by the supportive environment the school has created to help children learn and grow. Having met Year 6 pupils in Parliament, it was encouraging to hear about the impact the visit had on their understanding of democracy and talk about local issues.
The Junior Leadership Team asked thought provoking questions about how to change things, the role of MPs, and were great advocates for their school.”
