Every military veterans in the UK will soon enjoy reduced rail fares, thanks to a new government initiative.
Supporting our veterans and investing in the men and women of today’s Armed Forces formed a key part of the Conservative 2019 manifesto.
Now the government has fulfilled one of their major promises to introduce a new 'Veterans Railcard' that offers reduced rail fares to all British veterans of every generation.
James was delighted to welcome this initiative, and said -
"The sacrifices made by of our Armed Forces personnel, veterans and their families can never be overestimated.
I am delighted that we are acknowledging their invaluable contributions with this unique and valuable railcard for all veterans and their companions."
The Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, presented Captain Sir Tom Moore with the very first Veterans’ Railcard on Tuesday 13th October at the veteran's home in Bedfordshire.
Aimed at supporting veterans after their service, the new railcard will provide up to a third off all peak and off-peak fares, as well as discounted travel for adult companions and children. It forms part of the government’s commitment to repay the debt we all owe to those who have served the United Kingdom.
The card pays tribute to the Royal Navy, RAF and Army, using the colours featured on the veterans’ flag. An estimated 830,000 veterans, who are not eligible for existing railcards, will now be able to get up to a third off rail fares from 5 November 2020.
The new card will be on sale at an introductory price of just £21 until 31 March 2021.
