Two schemes, that guarantee interviews for ex-armed forces personnel and care leavers, have been introduced for those applying to work for the borough council.
Cllr Stuart Dark, MBE, Leader of the borough council, explained:
“Candidates who meet the essential criteria set out in the personal specification for a job vacancy and who are either a veteran or care leaver will be guaranteed an interview for the role for which they are applying.
“We’re already an armed forces friendly employer and have been awarded the silver level in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, but are working towards achieving the gold award. This guaranteed interview scheme is a step in the right direction. It will help support those who are recently out of service into civilian roles that are still effectively within the field of public service, something we believe may be attractive to ex forces personnel.”
The second scheme is aimed at encouraging care leavers, or care experienced, young people between the age of 16 and 25 years old to consider public sector roles as part of the Norfolk-wide Youth Enterprise Scheme project which has received Community Renewal Funding. The borough council is supporting this scheme to appeal to those leaving care who are starting out their career as an apprentice or at an entry level. If successfully appointed they would be supported in their role with a workplace buddy and a development plan.
These schemes apply to all vacancies at the borough council, as long as the applicants can evidence that they meet the essential criteria for the role. Those who are unsuccessful in securing the role will be given detailed feedback to assist them with future applications/interviews.
