James this weekend visited Lynn Museum, Bircham Windmill, Rainbow Park, and Searles to show his support for English Tourism Week.
Co-oordinated by VisitEngland and taking place from 22-31 May, English Tourism Week is an annual celebration of the tourism industry, highlighting its economic importance to local economies and promoting the innovation, quality and range of products and services on offer to encourage more domestic breaks.
James was shown round Lynn Museum by Robin Hanley, Norfolk Museum’s Deputy Director. He was pleased to see Horace the Indian Tiger again, talk about Frederick Savage’s innovation in steam powered fairground machinery, as well as the potential to do more to promote the marvel of Seahenge.
At the family run Bircham Windmill, James climbed to the top of the windmill to enjoy views of the campsite and countryside having baked bread in the kitchen below.
Rainbow Park is a Hunstanton institution and James had a ride on the Helter Skelter which along with the Ferris Wheel were installed during lockdown. After winning a cuddly toy, he enjoyed the other rides and attractions. He also met Paul Searle, managing director of Searles Leisure Resort to talk about their new investments at Heacham Manor.
It comes as the tourism agency’s latest forecasts show that domestic tourism spending is estimated this year of £51.4 billion, up 51% on 2020, but still only a little more than half of the £91.6 billion in 2019.
Last year alone saw about two-thirds of the value wiped off the domestic tourism industry, a £58 billion loss to the economy.
Speaking after the visits James said: “With our stunning coast, beaches, countryside, as well as many attractions, and great places to eat, North West Norfolk has so much to offer. Now is the time to support local businesses and jobs that rely on tourism as we continue along the road to recovery."
