Join in with the Coronation celebrations in West Norfolk
The borough council is planning or supporting events to mark the Coronation of King Charles III over the extra May Bank Holiday weekend.
Saturday 6 May 2023: Watch the Coronation in King’s Staithe Square and enjoy a right royal party afterwards
The party starts in the aptly named King’s Staithe Square, King’s Lynn, with a big screen broadcasting the Coronation Service from Westminster Abbey. This will be followed by entertainment, live music from artists including The Chebbs, and fireworks will finish the night.
There will be activities for children in the square from noon until 5pm organised by Rachael Williams, Learning and Engagement Officer at Stories of Lynn. As Royal Navy Minesweepers visited King’s Lynn as part of the 1953 Coronation Celebrations there will be a minesweeping game to play alongside crafts including crown making.
Sunday 7 May 2023: Lazy Sunday afternoon in King’s Staithe Square, King’s Lynn
More music and entertainment on stage, along with activities for children between noon and 5pm.
Bank Holiday Monday 8 May 2023: The Big Help Out
The borough council has issued small grants of up to £200 to help those organising their own Coronation related activities in west Norfolk, some of these will be held on the national Big Help Out day. A fund of £13,500 was earmarked for the scheme with funds being released to successful applicants in April.
Cllr Graham Middleton, deputy leader of the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, and cabinet member for business, culture and heritage, said:
"There will be lots for families to enjoy across west Norfolk. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for sunshine, we're planning a right royal party in King’s Lynn and am looking forward to everything we have planned.”
In addition to the events in King’s Lynn, the borough council is also providing support for events in Downham Market and Hunstanton where there will be local celebrations to mark this historic occasion.
