James Wild MP visits Terrington St Clement Community School
As part of his continued focused on improving education in North West Norfolk, James Wild MP visited Terrington St Clement Community School to learn more about the school’s value, meet pupils, and answer questions from the School Council.
Whilst speaking to the School Council, James was asked questions about his position as MP for North West Norfolk. Questions varied from how his job helps children, why he became an MP, and what the most important aspects are of his role. In response James talked about wanting to help schools give every child the best start in life, his commitment to improving the area he grew up in, and the challenge of prioritising issues. James was also interested to learn about what the pupils would change if they were an MP with responses covering litter, banning smoking, and protecting animals.
On James’ tour of the school, Headteacher, Miss Conner, spoke about the school’s reading ambitions with the aim for each pupil to read at least 20 books a year with reading badges awarded to those doing so. With different colour badges for the different years, the school incentivises pupils to read beyond the curriculum with full access to the school library.
After the tour, James sat down with Miss Conner and Mr Bouskill, Chair of Governors, and discussed issues schools are facing including Ofsted inspections, local opportunities, funding, and industrial action which James will raise with ministers.
James Wild MP said:
‘I was pleased to visit Terrington St Clement Community School and to talk to the school council about the environment and other issues and how to improve our area. It was great to hear about the pupils’ passion for reading and see how proud they are of their reading badges.
It is always an important part of a visit to take the time to speak to headteachers, staff, and governors and by doing so I can take valuable feedback to Ministers on the challenges facing schools.”
Miss Conner, Headteacher commented:
‘It was a pleasure to welcome James Wild MP to Terrington Community School and to discuss some of the challenges that are currently facing education. Our School Council also enjoyed finding out a little more about James' job and his views about local issues.’
