James Wild MP visits Highgate Infant School
As part of his focus on helping to improve education in North West Norfolk, James Wild MP’s latest visit took him to Highgate Infant School to meet with the Headteacher Mrs Kirby and pupils.
Highgate Infant School offers education to children from 4-7 years old with reception and years one and two with children then typically moving to other local schools such as Eastgate Primary School or Greyfriars Primary School.
James was shown round the school by representatives from the school council in each class and activities included listening to pupils reading out poems they had written about dragons and seeing a maths lesson. He heard about the importance of the school’s allotment to pupils and the issues caused by muntjac in damaging produce the children were growing.
During his visit, James spoke to the Headteacher about the school’s focus on developing a friendly, nurturing environment where children have a positive approach to learning which allows them to achieve their full potential. He met teachers from each of the classes and spoke about efforts to promote good attendance and good outcomes in reading and maths.
As a small school, Highgate Infant School aims to deliver the best educational support to each pupil with wider help provided by teaching assistants to those with additional needs. James spent time talking to the teaching assistants regarding the support available and challenges they face.
Speaking after the visit, James Wild MP said:
“It was a pleasure to visit Highgate Infant School and the warmth and community atmosphere was apparent from the moment I arrived. The committed staff have created a supportive environment where children can achieve their best with additional help for those pupils needing it.”
