The charity was established in April 2022 and offers support and guidance to individuals of all ages whose lives are affected by autism. The charity is run entirely by volunteers or family with experience of autism and works to deliver a vast range of social events and activities for their members.
The group supports autistic people, their families, and carers and aims to provide trips and activities including swimming, soft play, skating, trampolining, gymnastics, adults’ meals, and cinema. They also organise training for anyone including professionals who would benefit from understanding more about autism as well as campaigning for better local services for people living in West Norfolk.
Chair of the Trustees of West Norfolk Autism Group, Karan McKerrow said:
“We are absolutely delighted and so grateful to James for choosing to support us when he takes on the London Marathon. We’re a small local charity set up to support autistic people and their families here in West Norfolk. Our group is run by just four unpaid volunteers who are either parents or carers of autistic people or we are autistic ourselves.
We rely on donations, grants and fundraising such as this incredible run James is doing for us. James came to our opening almost two years ago and has watched our charity grow. We are extremely appreciative of James’ support and wish him lots of luck.”
James said:
“I said before I wouldn’t run the marathon again but I’m pleased to have the opportunity to do so for a brilliant local charity. Taking on this challenge knowing that I’ll be helping such a deserving cause will certainly spur me on in the months of training and on the race day itself. Having seen the charity grow, please do support the volunteers making such a difference.”

This will be James’ fifth marathon and third as MP for North West Norfolk. In 2022 he completed the marathon in 3 hours 37 mins and raised £1,000 in sponsorship for each of three local charities: Pandora Project, West Norfolk Befriending, and West Norfolk Deaf Association. In 2021, James raised £6,000 in total to support Little Discoverers, the Purfleet Trust, and West Norfolk Carers.
