During the Second Reading of the Fisheries Bill, James spoke to support this Bill which creates the framework for the UK as an independent coastal state outside the Common Fisheries Policy.
In the debate, James talked about the fishing fleet in Lynn, Brancaster, and along the coast and in support of the plans for a thriving and sustainable fishing industry and to raise concerns from local fishers about plans to change the approach to shrimp permitting and the Wash Fisheries Order. He welcomed the powers in the Bill to license foreign vessels which will allow supertrawlers to be banned.
With a view to the long term and the sustainability of the sector, he pressed for more support for skills and encouraging young people into the sector and introducing apprenticeship for future skippers.
