On Tuesday, James met Debbie Regan, Project Manager of the One to One Project, King's Lynn, to talk about the critical work they do support people facing emotional and mental difficulties in West Norfolk.
The One to One Project was established in 1984, with charitable status, to provide long-term support to adults experiencing emotional, mental, or, social distress across West Norfolk.
The services they offer are counselling, mentoring, and group work.
Counselling services are normally offered for up to 12 months and consist of one weekly hour-long appointment on the same day, at the same time, providing people with a safe space to express any difficulties they may be facing.
The mentoring service is aimed at helping people to achieve realistic goals in order to help overcome challenging circumstances. These goals are set together with the client and mentor, with the service being offered for 6 months. While group work is a great way for people to meet others who may be experiencing similar struggles. During the sessions, clients learn tools to overcome barriers in a small friendly supported environment.
Speaking after the visit James said, "The One to One project is rightly highly regarded for its long-standing work supporting people in West Norfolk. While Covid-19 has undoubtedly led to real challenges for individuals, it has also driven changes in how this valuable support is provided that can be taken forward."
During the visit James discussed with Debbie how the One to One Project had adapted due to Covid. She informed him that counselling services had moved to virtual one-to-one in order to maintain a safe environment.
Debbie also spoke to James about the training they offer for counsellors, with the opportunity to participate in the CPD Training Programme, gaining a greater understanding when working with those suffering from addiction or substance use. Counsellors
James was also informed about the steps taken under the duty of care to individuals and staff, as well as their plans for future services and how they plan to take best parts of virtual counselling forward as part of their service.
